The desk brief
On 3 November 2026 the Bank of Ghana will officially launch a redesigned series of Ghana cedi banknotes called the 'Heritage Series'; the central bank says the upgraded notes feature enhanced security and durability and will co-circulate with existing banknotes, which remain legal tender.
The change is primarily a domestic cash-management and anti-counterfeiting measure: upgraded security features and durability should reduce counterfeiting risk and replacement costs and may modestly affect demand for cash-handling and note-issuing operations. There is no direct implication for sovereign debt markets or FX beyond usual operational and currency-confidence channels, and existing notes will remain legal tender during the roll-out.
Bank of Ghana public launch event at Bank Square, Accra, and circulation start on 3 Nov 2026.
