The desk brief
On Sept. 30, 2026 China’s official manufacturing PMI rose to 50.1, returning to expansion territory after two months of contraction, while the non-manufacturing PMI also moved above 50, signalling a pickup in demand that could support commodity prices if sustained.
A sustained improvement in China’s PMI can lift demand for industrial and energy commodities, supporting prices that matter for export revenues of commodity-dependent African sovereigns. Higher commodity prices would, all else equal, ease external financing pressure and could compress eurobond spreads on affected sovereign curves. However, actual spread moves depend on global rates, geopolitical risk, local fundamentals and market sentiment, so the PMI alone does not guarantee re-pricing.
Next monthly NBS PMI release (October) and upcoming Chinese trade and industrial production prints for confirmation of sustained demand.
