Egypt’s cabinet rules out swapping Suez Canal or state assets to settle domestic debt

On 30 August 2026 Egypt’s Cabinet said it has no plan to transfer, pledge or transfer ownership of state assets — explicitly including the Suez Canal — to the central bank or other bodies to settle domestic debt, rejecting asset-for-debt swaps and sticking to conventional debt-reduction tools like maturity extension, fiscal consolidation and asset partnerships.

The Cabinet rejection removes an unconventional liability-management option that could have shifted assets onto the central bank or altered intra‑state balance-sheet solutions. That constrains policy makers to fiscal adjustments, maturity-extension and asset-partnership routes; it may influence domestic debt-structure debates and options available to the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Egypt but does not itself imply immediate market repricing.

Monitor Egypt’s Ministry of Finance fiscal consolidation plan and any IMF or creditor discussions on public-debt restructuring.
