On September 22, 2026 the Council of the European Union decided to extend the EU asset-freeze sanctions regime targeting Russia for 36 months, renewing measures covering more than 3,000 individuals and entities until September 22, 2029.
The Council's 36-month extension preserves counterparty, trade-finance and asset-freeze frictions between EU banks and sanctioned Russian-linked entities. That sustained tail-risk supports energy exporters' external receipts (which can be credit-positive for long-dated external debt of oil-exporting African sovereigns like Angola) while maintaining rollover and trade-finance premia for importers and borrowers reliant on EU banks.
