The decision reflects improved fiscal consolidation, stabilising government debt dynamics and longer debt maturities, the government said on 5 June 2026.
The upgrade should, conditional on continued fiscal consolidation and implementation of reforms, lower sovereign risk premia and ease borrowing costs for South African issuers—especially on long-dated government debt given the sovereign’s long average maturity profile. Pass-through to corporate and regional spreads will depend on market confidence in durable fiscal and structural progress; absent sustained improvement the effect could be limited.
