On 26–27 August 2026 the IMF published its latest assessment calling on Nigeria to deepen fiscal, monetary and governance reforms—including tax policy, revenue collection, public financial management and stronger monetary policy transmission—to strengthen stability and support longer‑term market confidence.
If implemented credibly, strengthened revenue mobilisation, public financial management and improved monetary transmission could reduce sovereign financing pressures and support Nigeria’s domestic and external bond curves by lowering risk premia. Conversely, delays or weak implementation would likely preserve the existing risk premium and complicate access to external market financing without a new IMF arrangement.
