IMF staff mission met Mozambican authorities (9–18 Sep 2026) to discuss potential ECF programme

On 9–18 September 2026 an IMF staff mission led by Pablo Lopez-Murphy visited Maputo to hold technical discussions with Mozambican authorities on reforms that could underpin a possible Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The mission highlighted large fiscal and external imbalances and said discussions on a Fund-supported programme will continue.

A Fund-supported ECF could, if agreed and later approved, strengthen FX buffers and lower rollover risk for Mozambique’s external debt, potentially compressing medium- and long-dated Eurobond spreads. Conversely, failure to secure a programme or slippage on conditionality would likely raise near-term rollover and short-to-medium curve risk; actual market moves would depend on terms, timing, and broader benchmark yield shifts.

Follow-up technical talks or a staff-level agreement between IMF and Mozambique, expected in the coming months, and any official IMF statement on a programme timetable.
