J.P. Morgan adds Nigeria to GBI‑EM Edge with 7.4% country weight

On September 14, 2026 J.P. Morgan announced that Nigeria and 16 eligible FGN local‑currency bonds were included in its new GBI‑EM Edge index, assigning Nigeria a 7.4% country weighting and representing roughly $17.47 billion of eligible securities across the index.

Inclusion in the GBI‑EM Edge creates mechanically driven passive demand from investors and funds that track or benchmark to the index; this can increase foreign investor interest in naira‑denominated FGN bonds, exerting downward pressure on domestic yields (especially at the long end) and lifting FX demand for the naira. Actual price or FX moves will depend on the pace of implementation, portfolio flows and local liquidity conditions and are not guaranteed by index inclusion alone.
