IMF staff mission arrives in Nairobi to open talks on a new Kenya financing programme

On 24 February 2026 an IMF team arrived in Nairobi to begin negotiations on a new IMF-supported programme for Kenya, opening formal staff-level talks on medium-term financing and fiscal stability that could, if concluded, restore official financing and ease sovereign refinancing and KES pressures.

If negotiations conclude in a timely manner and lead to an IMF-supported programme, official financing could reduce near-term sovereign refinancing risk and relieve some shilling pressure by improving confidence in Kenya's external position. Conversely, protracted talks with no quick staff-level outcome would likely sustain elevated domestic refinancing premia, especially around coupon/maturity dates on the domestic belly of the yield curve.

IMF and Nairobi aim to conclude talks and reach an agreement by June–July 2026.
