Kenya plans $815m Eurobond and $500m Samurai in 2026/27 fiscal year

On 14 August 2026 reports said Kenya plans to issue an $815 million Eurobond and a $500 million Samurai bond during its 2026/27 fiscal year to raise external financing for public expenditure and debt management. The $500m Samurai is separate from a previously reported $500m sustainability-linked bond proposal for March 2026.

If realised, these planned external issues increase Kenya's gross external funding needs and concentrate refinancing risk on long-dated USD and JPY public curves. Market reception will depend on timing, tenor and investor take-up in Japan; a stronger dollar and higher US rates can raise USD funding costs even without spread widening, while Samurai demand and hedging costs will shape JPY-linked funding economics.
