Kenya announces upcoming IMF staff visit as talks on new support programme loom

On 12 August 2026 Kenya said an IMF staff team is expected in Nairobi in the coming weeks to discuss a potential successor Fund-supported programme with a lending component. The visit restarts staff-level negotiations that could affect official financing and the timing/terms of any IMF support.

If staff talks progress toward a staff-level agreement, official financing could lower rollover risk for Kenya’s medium-to-long USD sovereign maturities and ease eurobond premia. Conversely, delays or tougher conditionality would maintain pressure on the shilling and keep term premia in longer-dated dollar debt elevated, as private investors weigh financing gaps and conditionality risks.
