Kenya announces plan to buy back up to $500m of Eurobonds, to be refinanced by new USD issue

On 14–15 July 2026 Kenya announced a plan to repurchase up to $500 million of outstanding dollar-denominated sovereign Eurobonds and to finance the operation by issuing a new U.S. dollar bond. The transaction aims to extend the external maturity profile; the proposal had not received final approval at announcement.

If executed, a buyback financed by a new USD issuance would reduce near-term rollover and push redemptions further out the curve, lowering immediate refinancing pressure on Kenyas dollar bond maturities. The size, investor take-up and final coupon/tenor of the new bond will determine whether spreads compress or local FX/interest-rate channels are affected; market reaction will depend on pricing and issuance execution.

Treasury publishes offer/tender terms or a new USD bond prospectus and final size/pricing for the operation.
