Kenya to finance ~KSh1.146trn (~$8.82bn) 2026/27 budget deficit mostly onshore, starting July 2026

On 11 June 2026 Kenya announced it will finance nearly 90% of a record KSh1.146 trillion (about $8.82 billion) 2026/27 budget deficit from domestic markets starting July 2026, shifting a large share of near-term borrowing onto the onshore yield curve and into local investors’ portfolios.

If realised, financing ~90% of a KSh1.146trn deficit onshore will add supply pressure across the belly and longer segments of Kenya's shilling yield curve. Higher sovereign issuance would increase banks’ sovereign holdings and could crowd out private credit unless external financing or stronger domestic savings offset the move. Inflation, CBK policy and investor appetite for long-tenor local paper will shape whether spreads widen or the curve simply steepens.
