South Africa sells R2.55bn across 2038, 2039 and 2042 in Treasury auction

On 22 September 2026 South Africa’s National Treasury allotted R2.55 billion of fixed-rate bonds maturing in 2038, 2039 and 2042 at a weekly government auction. The sale updated long-end supply on the ZAR sovereign curve and showed strong demand metrics that will influence secondary-curve pricing.

The auction increases long-end issuance supply; strong bid-to-cover ratios across the three lines suggest appetite for higher absolute yields but could steepen the ZAR government curve if secondary-market clearing yields rise. Any move in long-dated sovereign yields may raise domestic corporate funding costs by repricing benchmark curves and affecting bank and repo collateral valuations, depending on foreign participation and secondary liquidity.
