Rwanda raises ~$190m via World Bank-backed dual-currency loan including debut JPY tranche

On 26–27 August 2026 Rwanda secured a World Bank Group-backed commercial sovereign loan totalling about US$190m made up of a €82m tranche and a JPY15bn tranche, with a 15-year maturity and a six-year grace period, introducing yen exposure to Rwanda’s external debt profile.

The 15-year tenor with a six‑year grace period should ease near‑term refinancing stress by deferring principal repayments and spreading debt service beyond the 2031 eurobond maturity. However, the yen tranche introduces FX exposure for a country whose revenues are largely in RWF; effectiveness will depend on hedging, concessionality of pricing and the size of future non‑domestic currency obligations. The World Bank guarantees mitigate credit risk and helped secure longer-term commercial funding on semi‑concessional terms.

Confirm disbursement timing, lender participation details and any hedging arrangements; monitor integration with Rwanda’s debt-service schedule around the Aug 2031 eurobond maturity.
