S&P affirms Kenya sovereign rating at 'B' on Aug 21, warns refinancing and reserve risks

On 21 August 2026 S&P Global Ratings affirmed the Republic of Kenya’s long-term sovereign rating at 'B' with a stable outlook and warned that sustained reserve declines, rising debt-service costs or debt-repurchase operations perceived as distressed could put the rating under pressure.

The affirmation preserves Kenya’s current credit opinion but reiterates that external bonds remain sensitive to reserve trajectories and refinancing costs. If FX reserves fall or liability-management actions are viewed as distressed, investors could demand higher premia on Kenya’s eurobonds and other external issuance, widening spreads versus stronger frontier peers and raising sovereign borrowing costs.

S&P’s next scheduled EMEA sovereign review and Kenya’s upcoming debt-management operations (monthly switch auctions) are the immediate milestones to monitor.
