SARB hikes repo rate 25bp to 7.25% on 23 Sep 2026

On 23 September 2026 the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee unanimously raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%. The decision tightens South Africa’s policy stance, raising short-term ZAR funding costs and altering carry dynamics for higher-beta regional credits.

A 25bp repo increase mechanically raises domestic short-term rates and borrowing costs for banks, likely lifting yields along the ZAR short end and increasing domestic refinancing costs. This changes cross-border carry incentives versus higher-beta African credits, conditional on global rates and rand FX moves; it does not by itself prove any specific spread or price move.
