South Africa raises September fuel prices; inland 50ppm diesel back above R30/L, slate levy rises

On 2 September 2026 the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources adjusted official fuel prices: inland wholesale 50ppm diesel rose to R30.05 per litre and the slate levy increased from 61.38c to 83.28c per litre. Petrol 93/95 rose by R1.34/L; changes take effect midnight into 2 September 2026.

On 2 September 2026 the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources adjusted official fuel prices: inland wholesale 50ppm diesel rose to R30.05 per litre and the slate levy increased from 61.38c to 83.28c per litre. Petrol 93/95 rose by R1.34/L; changes take effect midnight into 2 September 2026.

The September adjustment directly raises consumer and business transport costs, adding upward pressure to headline CPI and complicating the SARB’s policy trade-off between inflation containment and growth. The shock is concentrated in RSA local-rate duration and diesel-intensive corporates and logistics chains; fiscal pressure could increase if government enacts temporary levy relief.
