South Africa raises petrol and diesel prices from 2 Sep 2026; unions call for levy relief

On 2 September 2026 South Africa implemented large fuel-price increases: petrol up ~R1.29–R1.34/litre and diesel up ~R2.93–R3.15/litre, with the slate levy rising to 83.28c/l. COSATU and other unions immediately called for temporary fuel-levy relief to shield workers and contain cost pressures.

Higher administered fuel prices directly raise transport and production costs, increasing CPI passthrough risks and short-term household expenditure pressure. That can raise near-term inflation expectations and, conditional on policy response, complicate debt-service affordability and fiscal transfers. The magnitude of any sovereign or corporate funding impact depends on persistence of price rises and government relief measures.
