The signed loan reduces South Africa’s near‑term external funding requirement by US$1.0bn and can lower short‑term sovereign external refinancing pressure conditional on full disbursement and execution of the MTSR. It also narrows contingent liability risk linked to municipal guarantees if funds are used to strengthen metro utilities and reduce the need for sovereign backstops; impacts depend on timing of disbursements and achievement of independently verified performance targets.
