The desk brief
On 26 August 2026 Uganda announced plans to issue its first sovereign green bond targeting up to $500 million (about UGX 1.86 trillion), to be split into local-currency (UGX) and foreign-currency (USD) tranches to attract domestic banks and international investors.
The issuance could broaden Uganda’s funding sources if the planned UGX tranche draws domestic banks and the USD tranche attracts overseas investors. Credibility of the Green Bond Framework, investor roadshows, and the EU’s stated support (issuance-cost subsidy and partial buy) will affect demand, pricing and the extent of borrowing diversification; absence of a credible pipeline of projects could limit impact.
MoFPED to finalise Green Bond Framework by end-August 2026 and start investor roadshows.
