On 11 September 2026 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2828 (2026), renewing the 2005 sanctions regime under Resolution 1591 for one month and maintaining the arms embargo limited to Darfur while leaving proposals to expand measures across Sudan under continued negotiation.
The desk brief
On 11 September 2026 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2828 (2026), renewing the 2005 sanctions regime under Resolution 1591 for one month and maintaining the arms embargo limited to Darfur while leaving proposals to expand measures across Sudan under continued negotiation.
The Security Council’s one-month technical rollover keeps the existing targeted asset freezes, travel bans and Darfur-specific arms embargo in place, avoiding an immediate broadened UN sanctions shock to Sudanese sovereign exposure. However, ongoing negotiations and persistent conflict mean trade frictions, insurance costs and cross-border commodity disruptions (notably affecting Sudan and neighbouring corridor-dependent markets) could remain elevated if scope is later widened.
Panel mandate and sanctions currently run to 9 November 2026; Council negotiations to resume before expiry.
