US Treasury doubles long-end buyback sizes to at least $4bn, effective Sept 9, 2026
On September 9, 2026 the US Treasury will increase nominal long-end liquidity-support buyback operations (10–20y and 20–30y sectors) from a $2 billion maximum to at least $4 billion per operation for the remainder of the refunding quarter (through November 4, 2026).
The desk brief
On September 9, 2026 the US Treasury will increase nominal long-end liquidity-support buyback operations (10–20y and 20–30y sectors) from a $2 billion maximum to at least $4 billion per operation for the remainder of the refunding quarter (through November 4, 2026).
Larger Treasury buybacks supply additional liquidity support to 10–30 year nominal sectors and can cap US long-end yields. Any resulting reduction in duration-driven US rate volatility would relieve discount-rate pressure on long-dated African USD sovereign bonds (notably Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria), easing refinancing sensitivity and reserve/FX stress to the degree yields respond.
