On 11 August 2026 drone attacks struck the Zawiya oil/refining complex, igniting a tank holding about 4.5 million litres of gasoline and prompting Libya’s National Oil Corporation to warn it may declare force majeure and suspend operations at the 120,000 bpd Zawiya refinery, disrupting Mediterranean crude/refined-product flows.
The desk brief
On 11 August 2026 drone attacks struck the Zawiya oil/refining complex, igniting a tank holding about 4.5 million litres of gasoline and prompting Libya’s National Oil Corporation to warn it may declare force majeure and suspend operations at the 120,000 bpd Zawiya refinery, disrupting Mediterranean crude/refined-product flows.
The strikes reduce processing capacity in a Mediterranean refining hub that is pipeline-connected to the Sharara field. If NOC follows through with a halt or force majeure, domestic crude normally refined at Zawiya could be diverted or left unprocessed, increasing regional demand for imported refined products and raising costs and fiscal pressure for proximate importers such as Egypt and Tunisia. Wider African exporters farther from the Mediterranean would be less directly affected.
Whether NOC formally declares force majeure or announces a shutdown and the timeline for restoring Zawiya operations.
