TotalEnergies announces full restart of Mozambique LNG Area 1; first LNG targeted for 2029

On 29 January 2026 TotalEnergies and Mozambique’s government announced the full restart of Mozambique LNG Area 1 project activities onshore and offshore, with construction remobilised and first LNG now targeted for 2029, reversing the 2021 suspension.

The restart increases the likelihood of earlier USD inflows to Mozambique once LNG exports begin, which could support sovereign external financing capacity and creditor sentiment. However, material execution risks remain: remobilisation, contractor and workforce re-engagement, security costs, and schedule slippage mean actual export timing and receipts remain conditional and uncertain.
